Coordinating Rides from the Airport

Since we know at least a few people are flying in, we thought it might be good to use this blog to help some of our guests coordinate rides.  The best way is probably just to post your arrival/departure times in the comments (and your airport, especially if you're not coming into Norfolk).  We're hoping we'll find out some guests are coming in at roughly the same time, maybe even on the same flight, and could share rides or something.  

The other possibility is that some folks may be driving through Norfolk just as your flight is arriving.  In the end, it may be necessary to rent a car, but it might be possible to coordinate pickups, etc.  So, in the comments, leave your name and flight times.

Anyway, we'll see if it works.

1. First, just some information on our registry.  We are registered at:

2. I am hoping to organize some kind of ride-sharing program from the Norfolk airport to Duck.  Hopefully I can set up a message board here where people can work out arrival times.  As I've mentioned before, it's about an hour and forty-five minutes from the airport to Duck (though I think you can make it in less time), and anyone driving the route from Washington, Richmond, Baltimore, New York, or Kentucky will go right by the terminal.  I'm sure some of you will have similar arrival/departure times and thus perhaps could share a ride or even have someone driving to Duck pick you up.  Would this require some coordination?  Yes.  Do I think we can pull it off?  I certainly do.

Flight and Airport Information

Many of you all have asked (or are planning to ask) about flights and airports. The Outer Banks doesn't actually have an airport, but there are a few within driving distance.

Norfolk International Airport (code: ORF) in Norfolk, VA is your best bet. It's about an hour and forty-five minutes (been done in shorter) from the village of Duck, about an hour and a half from the Hilton Garden Inn. Southwest flies there. Those coming from Kentucky may find much better deals flying out of Louisville. I recently did a quick search for flights from Louisville to Norfolk on the Thursday/Friday before the wedding (June 11 and 12) and leaving Sunday (June 14) and found some good rates.

Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport (code: PHF) in Newport News, VA is your next best option. It's 2 hours from Duck, and my guess is that most people will find better fares flying into Norfolk, but it's worth a shot.

These are particularly close to the wedding site -- right in the middle of Duck and only a block or two walk from the wedding and reception. **Point of emphasis: We've done some quick calculations, and renting a house -- even if you're not there for a full week -- is generally the most affordable (and comfortable) accomodation option.**

Duck Rental Properties

Many folks have asked us about renting properties in Duck.  This is a great idea.  Duck's a small town -- there are no traffic lights, there are bike paths on both sides of the road, and you can walk everywhere, including to the wedding itself.  It's also the most reasonably-priced way to go.  

Below you'll find brief descriptions of houses in Duck and then links to the rental property websites (which will have more information).  Our wedding (Saturday, 6/13/09) falls just before peak season begins, which means it won't be completely packed down there but that many properties will still be rented.  Also, if you're interested in just a weekend rental, they are certainly a possibility, but you'll need to contact the realty company and talk to them.

Welcome

In addition to the usual stuff we'll be posting on our wedding site on The Knot (which is here), we'll also have frequent updates here.

Mostly it will be logistical stuff -- places to rent, transportation, etc. -- but we plan to include some tips for visiting Duck, places to eat, and that kind of thing.  Stay tuned.  I (this is Graham) might even get the urge to list my top ten all time wedding songs or something like that.  We'll see.

P.S. - For those of you wondering, "Route 12" is the highway that runs the length of the Outer Banks.  One of the most scenic drives you'll ever take.
