Duck 101

Welcome to Duck, North Carolina. My grandparents built one of the first houses in Duck about thirty years ago, back when Wee Winks Gas Station was pretty much the only thing around. The town itself goes back way beyond that -- for over 100 years it's been a small fishing and hunting (mostly turkeys and quail -- just kidding) village.

Duck is near the top of the Outer Banks, a thin strip of barrier islands that runs from just below the Virginia/NC border in the north to the bottom of Cape Lookout National Seashore, near Morehead City, NC in the south. Through most of this span, the islands are no more than a mile wide -- in Duck, it's only about two-thirds a mile from the Currituck Sound in the west to the Atlantic in the east. A quick word about the Sound: it's extremely shallow (you could probably walk out half a mile and still be touching), it's warm, and it's a great place for crabbing, bird-watching (one of Judy's favorite activities), and watersports.

The Town of Duck (recently upgraded from "The Village of Duck") somewhat long, but the heart of the town is just over a mile long, stretching out along Route 12, Duck Road. Here you'll find a number of restaurants, plenty of shops, watersports along the Sound. Both sides of the road have a bike/walking path, and you can rent bikes at Ocean Atlantic Rentals in Duck (I think they go for like $35 or so a week). The beach, restaurants, bars, seafood shops, vegetable stands -- all are easily accessible on foot.

I am in the process of putting together a comprehensive map of important places in Duck and throughout the Outer Banks. The map below has all sorts of places to eat, stay, rent bikes/jetskis, shop, get coffee, etc. I've also included some beach house rentals for guests whose information I had already (if you'd like me to include yours, email me at ghcornwell@gmail.com and let me know where you're staying). Click on each icon to get more information about each. I will be adding to this as we get closer to the date, and I will also have more info later on some of the other places/towns on the Outer Banks, so stay tuned.
